Every year my husband’s family plans a family reunion and I give everyone the gift of family portraits. This year we all traveled to Bear Lake, UT and it was breathtakingly gorgeous there. If I didn’t hate the snow so much I would seriously consider moving there. The weather was perfect, which was a nice break from the suffocating Las Vegas heat. Pictures were originally planned for the first night of the reunion but everything was super stressful with trying to get to the cabin, setting up, eating dinner and getting ready for pictures that we postponed pictures for the last night of the reunion.
I love capturing this family. They used to live in Las Vegas and their oldest was my very first photo shoot ever when she was a newborn. Looking back on that first session makes me cringe but also feel an incredible sense of pride of the growth I have made as a photographer over the last 6 years! I knew nothing about posing a newborn so there were lots and lots of up the nose shots. Then I didn’t really know how to edit so the tones were all over the place. It was a hot mess! The lighting was another horrible horrible situation.
So take note if you are a new photographer, to give yourself time and spend lots and lots and lots of time studying your craft and practicing.
One of the biggest challenges I faced with this session was that I had to photograph 20 people in 5 families in 2 hours in a location that was pretty foreign. The skies were cloudy all day so I was very hopeful. Then when we arrived at the beach the sun was still pretty high in the sky.
One of the biggest challenges families face in planning family portrait sessions is the question of what to wear. This mama always has killer style and one day while she was out shopping she came across some coral colored pants that she loved and then she built their wardrobe from there. That is the easiest way to plan the family wardrobe. The colors were perfect for the beach and they all looked gorgeous!
Thankfully the kids loved the sand and water and we got incredible portraits!
When is the last time you had your family portraits updated? I’d love to capture them for you!
