Project 365: Day 12 Las Vegas Children Photographer

A few months ago I stumbled upon a tutorial on getting a black background with completely natural light and no backdrop. I didn’t really think it was possible, but thought I would give it a try. Did you know one of the best places for natural light is your front/backdoor. It really is.

So the way I set up these photos was I opened my front door, and had my kids sit in the doorway. I then turned off all lights and closed all blinds from behind them so it was pretty dark behind them. I then metered on their face and clicked away. The background wasn’t quite as dark as I would have liked straight out of camera so I am going to try to drop my settings down a notch to slightly underexpose to see how that looks. Once I opened them in ACR I just increased the blacks and fill light to keep the faces well lit and well you can see for yourself how well it worked!
